Farewell to the Golden Period

I keep promising belly shots, but John has not quite figured out all of the technology of our new camera yet. For now, you’ll have to get your baby fix with the newest addition to the Feener Snow family. A big welcome to Reese Wallace – what a cutie!! A big congratulations to Jason, Tracey and big sisters Mackenzie and Kendyl.

These are a few photos Laura sent me from Christmas Eve. Here is one belly shot, that doesn't quite do my belly justice these days. It was definitely a good Christmas and month of January.

Apparently the second trimester of pregnancy is often referred to as the Golden Period because many of the uncomfortable aspects of the first trimester have ended and it is before you get so big during the third trimester that you just feel uncomfortable and tired. So, today is the last day of my 26th week and the end of the second trimester. I can’t believe I’m 2/3 of the way there!!!! Having said that, physically I feel great. Just had my last prenatal check-up with my family doctor (Dr. Wong). I think she was sad to see us go. My next appt will be with the obstetrician at the end of February. Then, I think the appts. start to come fast and furiously.

Everything went really well during the appt today. John jr. was kicking up a storm. Dr. Wong said he was one active baby and that we are sure to have lots of fun once he comes along. Once again it took a while to get his heart beat because he really does not like the sound of the Doppler device. As soon as the dr. puts it on my belly, he darts as far away as possible. Dr. Wong said that he can now hear very well and will soon recognize our voices. She suggested we should talk and sing to him. She apparently has never heard me sing before. If she thinks he didn’t like the sound of the Doppler, imagine how the poor kid would cringe at the sound of mommy singing. When he finally realized it was futile to try and escape the Doppler any longer she was able to listen to the heartbeat. It sounded really strong and was 144.

My belly measuring 26 cm, which is exactly on track for 26 weeks. To all those of you who suggest I’m a little large for 26 weeks Dr. Wong assured me I was having an average size baby and that I was average size. Although I weighed in at 32 lbs heavier than my pre-pregnancy weight, she assured me that all was well and not to worry about it. My blood pressure was 122/64 and was perfectly fine. I do have to go for a routine blood glucose challenge test next week to make sure I don’t have gestational diabetes. My pregnant and previously pregnant friends tell me it’s a lot like drinking very very sweet Orange Crush. I guess they need to make sure in case there was a problem they don’t want the baby to end up being 13 lbs.

According to my baby books, John jr. now weighs a little under 2 pounds and measures about 14 inches, from head to heel. And his kicks are starting to really pack a punch. John can definitely feel him now when he starts to move about. Everyone says the baby’s sleep/awake patterns now will tell you a lot about the baby’s patterns when he is born. Well, I was under the delusions that he slept right through the night and was most active during the day. John tells me that this is not the case and that as soon as I fall asleep, the baby is having a party in my belly. Guess I’m a pretty sound sleeper. Guess Daddy is going to be on monitor listening patrol.

Other than that we have finally managed to pick a colour of paint for the baby's room. After searching high and low, far and wide I have come to the realization that there is no material to be had in Ottawa with monkeys, giraffes and elephants to make curtains. I found two great pictures of an elephant and a giraffe that we were able to pull a light blue out of for the walls. Now, if I can just find a plain curtain material to match. Poppy Lush is coming the weekend for a visit, so maybe next weekend we will tackle painting the room.
